Pandemonium broke out when other drivers resisted the policeman being taken away from the scene by a detachment of policemen that came to rescue their colleague from mob action.
It was gathered that the truck driver, a northerner, was conveying cows to Port-Harcourt in Rivers State.
According to eyewitness, the driver was flagged down by the policeman who demanded for N2, 000 bribe initially but insisted he would not take less down N1,000.
As argument ensued over the amount being demanded, the policeman pulled the trigger and shot the truck driver in the leg.
Bayelsa State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Asinim Butswatt, confirmed the incident, adding that all the policemen on duty at the checkpoint have been detained.
