Russia Saudi Arabia Live Stream – Match Preview

The long wait is finally over as hosts Russia take on Saudi Arabia in the opening game of the 2018 World Cup (WC) finals!

This game features the lowest-ranked side at these finals, Russia (70th), against the second-lowest ranked side in Saudi Arabia (67th). Egypt and Uruguay make up the rest of Group A.

Russia have had to rely on friendly internationals and last year’s Confederations Cup to ready for these finals.
Things haven’t gone to plan though, with the WC hosts failing to win any of their last seven games (D3, L4), including defeats to Argentina, Brazil and France.

At home, Russia have only won three games out of the last 14 (W3, D5, L6).
Saudi Arabia come into this game after a narrow 2-1 loss to Germany, their third straight defeat. Away form is a concern for the Saudis as they have recorded just one win (vs Kuwait) in the last eleven (W1, D2, L8) – not including neutral venues.

After the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia have qualified for the WC finals on three occasions but never got out of their group. This will be the Saudis fifth finals and apart from 1994, when they made the last 16, they have also failed to get past the group stage.

The sides have met once in history, with Saudi Arabia winning 4-2 in Riyadh in 1993.

Key battle:

Mohammad Al-Sahlawi (SAU) has 28 international goals – 16 during qualifying.

He will be directly up against Russia keeper and captain Igor Akinfeev, who will win his 107th cap in this game.

Stats attack:

Russia have conceded in each of their last nine games, and in 11 of their last 12 home games.

Russia’s last nine tournament results (WC, EC, CC) read: W1, D3, L5.

Saudi Arabia‘s last ten games have all produced over 1.5 goals.

Over 0.5 goals have been seen at half-time in each of Saudi Arabia’s last nine games.
